For the Christmas holiday we drove to England. We took the ferry and when we landed the customs official asked Dad who was driving our car, if he spoke English. Dad replied that he was English and we were waved on. We went to Reading, Newcastle and Birmingham. We drove in one day from Dijon to Reading which was quite a feat. We stayed with the Pages in the official residence for the Vice-Chancellor which was on a farm. The children found a huge lost dog but he had a collar and we were able to identify the owner who came on a motorcycle to get him, put the dog in his lap and drove away. When in the car with Sheila when she passed the cows grazing in the fields she would say "hello ladies" as we passed them. After a few days we drove to Newcastle and split up. The children stayed with the Stokers and Dad and I with the Turners. Everyone had a really good time. We had Christmas dinner with one family and tea with the other. After a few days we drove to Birmingham and stayed with the Ellises. Again everyone had a good time. I seem to remember that one or more of the Ellis children stayed with friend(s) in order to make room for all of us. Andrew remembers first footing with Gordon and his Dad for the New Year. Note the picture at the front door, #42 Tyndale Crescent.
